9. Laura's presentation on disability
-She showed clips from the documentary "Murderball," it's
about a wheelchair Olympic rugby team.  The theme for
National Service Week is "Kids with Disabilities."  Laura
has worked a lot with people who have had disabilites - it's
something she's really passionate about.

-She asked, "What do you think disability is?"  It was a
hard question to answer - the medical model is different
than the social model.  Not even experts totally agree.  She
explained about the different kinds of disabilities.

-The advocacy component of working with people with
disabilities is important to Laura.  Changing your
vocabulary is especially important - there's a movement in
the disability community for person-first language.  There
are problems with employment and accessibility (especially
at the U of C campus) for people with disabilities.

-Anyone can contribute to society - but there are a lot of
barriers for people with disabilities that need to be
overcome.
